Wild&Slow, Nov ’12


 

 

 

 

Wild & Slow was an event held by Slow Food Ireland in Macreddin Village in Wicklow this weekend. The emphasis was on wild produce and all that was on sale had been foraged in the surrounding hills or shot. What was on offer was mostly preserves, jams, vinegars and oils, as well as a lot of venison and pheasant. The tasters were mighty and we had a nibble of ‘fruit cheese’, heather and ivy honey, venison jam, wild garlic champ and, the definite favourite, wild blackberry marshmallows.

I left this afternoon inspired to investigate my back garden for what’s on offer, and to look into the possibility of foraging in Dublin. Both Phoenix and Marley Park were mentioned, as was the leadmines beside Cherrywood.  Free eating at it’s finest.
